Culdesac Tempe is transforming urban living by doing away with the need for cars and promoting a sustainable, walkable neighborhood. It provides a peek into a future where cities are planned with people, not cars, in mind, with features like outdoor kitchens, dog parks, and fitness centers.
For most Americans, getting around is still mostly dependent on their cars. However, a recent initiative seeks to alter that.
Proclaiming itself as “the first car-free neighborhood built from scratch in the U.S.” is a Tempe, Arizona real estate development.
The Culdesac Tempe development began construction in 2019 and its first occupants moved in this spring. It is forbidden for any resident to bring their own vehicles, or to at least park them on property or nearby.
Although the community still uses cars extensively, it does so through ridesharing services like Lyft and car sharing programs like Envoy, a community-based platform and service for electric car sharing. The two businesses are the project's official partners.
